2066602 9104503 PCTABS00003 A marker tape (10) for location of a buried conduit (24) having a plurality of electronic markers (14) spaced thereon at predetermined intervals. The distance between the markers encodes information about the buried conduit (24). The tape (10) may be a nonconductive ribbon or cord, and the markers (14) are preferably passive circuits tuned to a specific frequency. The tape ribbon embodiment (10) may include slots (20) therein for receiving the markers (14). The markers (14) may be oriented in a predetermined pattern to encode additional information. The markers (14) may also be attached directly to the outer or inner surface of the conduit (24), or imbedded in the wall of the conduit (14).
