An electronic registration system in which indirect methods are used to obtain product serial numbers at the point of sale and/or to access serial number information in connection with a return transaction. The system use a unique product package code that is linked to a stored serial number and/or a unique payment code obtained from the purchaser's form of payment. Transaction information is linked to the code and is located and retrieved by the system when processing a return transaction.
