ABSTRACT An electronic sewing machine with a dot matrix display for representing the image of a sele- cted pattern to be stitched, comprises a first memory storing stitch control data for different patterns to be stitched and producing an initial data of a pattern when the pattern is selected; the memory sequentially produces the stitch control data of the selected pattern each time the memory receives a stitch renewing signal and finally pro- duces a cycle finishing data for repeatedly producing , the stitch control data of the pattern; a second memory storing display condition designating data which may be produced in dependence upon a selected pattern to represent the pattern on the display; a counter for counting up the cycle finishing data of the first memory until the number of the cycle finishing data comes to a set number, and then to produce a signal for designating a pattern display calculation, the counter producing a signal as well to cause the first memory to produce the initial data of the pattern; a calculator receiving the stitch control data of the selected pattern to produce a signal for renewing the stitch control data into a display data for linearly interpolating between the adjacent stitches of the pattern; a third memory being reset each time a pattern is selected to temporarily store the display data and then give the display data to the dot matrix display; a logic circuit receiving a timing signal while the display calculation designating signal is interrupted, and producing a signal causing the first memory to renew the stitch control signal per rotation of the sewing machine; a drive circuit receiving the output from the first memory to drive the stitch forming mechanism of the sewing machine and an inhibition circuit maintaining the initial stitch control data of the first memory while the display calculation designating signal is issued, to inhibit the other stitch control signals from being applied to the drive circuit.
