A self-contained electronic device (4, 6, 8) instantaneously assess the stored energy capacity of single, two-volt; lead-acid cells (26); or of batteries comprised of such cells (26). The testing device is electrically connected to the terminals of a cell or battery (26) and measures its dynamic conductance with a small; time-varying signal (36). An internal conductance standard (24) permits initial calibration of the device to assure accuracy of the cell/battery measurements. Means (56; 58, 60, 62, 64, 66, 68) are provided for entering a "reference conductance", defined to be the dynamic conductance of an identically rated and constructed cell or battery having 100 % energy capacity. The device displays (50, 72) either the test cell/battery's measured conductance in Siemens (mhos), or its "percent capacity" determined by appropriately scaling its measured conductance in accordance with "reference conductable". When determining "percent capacity", an LED (72) lights if the result is less than a preset threshold value (70).

Un dispositif électronique autonome (4, 6, 8) évalue instantanément la capacité d'énergie emmagasinée dans des piles d'acide-plomb simples à deux volts (26); ou dans des batteries composées de telles piles (26). Le testeur est électriquement connecté aux bornes d'une pile ou d'une batterie (26) et mesure sa conductance dynamique à l'aide d'un petit signal variable en temps (36). Un étalon de conductance interne (24) permet l'étalonnage initial du dispositif pour assurer la précision des mesures de pile/de batterie. Des moyens (56, 58, 60, 62, 64, 66, 68) sont prévus pour introduire une "conductance de référence", définie comme étant la conductance dynamique d'une pile ou batterie de type et de construction identiques et présentant une capacité d'énergie de 100 %. Le dispositif affiche (50, 72) soit la conductance mesurée en Siemens de la pile/batterie d'essai, soit son "pourcentage de capacité". Lors de l'évaluation du "pourcentage de capacité", une diode électroluminescente (72) s'allume si le résultat es inférieur à une valeur de seuil préétablie (70).
