An electro-mechanical system for shifting gears (316, 320) on a bicycle (20) calculates gear ratios based on rider cadence and bicycle speed and then sorts the gear ratios in order from lowest to highest. During automatic operation, the system determines if a calculated cadence is within limits set by the rider, and changes the gear ratio as necessary in order to keep the calculated cadence within predetermined limits.
