A pen including a marking device (1120) such as an ink jet head and a stylus (1154) for contacting the writing surface, the pen being operative to mark a visible path onto the surface, the marking device being electronically controllable to change an attribute of the path such as colour or line thickness. The pen includes a user interface such as buttons or a sliders (1404, 1406, 1408) and a display (1410) whereby a user may modify the attribute. A sensor is capable of sensing images in-cluding coded data or colour which can be stored in a memory or transmitted to an external control source. A user can select attributes by cycling or searching through stored sets thereof. Stored sets of at least one attibute being searched may be sequentially deposited in the path or displayed.
