ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An electronically controlled franking machine comprises a processor and non-volatile semi-conductor stores as control elements. Associated with the processor is an additional switch which is shifted thereby into the operative position in the event of a power-failure signal. The said switch connects stor- age capacitors to the non-volatile semi-conductor stores, so that these take over the data from the working store. One of the non- volatile stores also has a special register into which the number of write-cycles performed is written in such a manner that the value n + 1 ?n applies each time the power is restored. When a predetermined total of write-cycles is reached, a display signal is produced or a print-stop device is activated.
