ABSTRACT A brushing device for use with a vacuum cleaner and having a brush driven by a motor separately from the motor of the vacuum cleaner, is provided with a speed adjustment device to control the speed of the brush motor. Such speed adjustment device may adjust the speed of the brush motor alone or both motors collectively, or alternatively separate speed adjustment devices may be provided, one for each motor. In this way the brushing speed and/or the suction can be adjusted to suit the surface being cleaned.
