ELECTROOPTIC INSTRUMENTS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Various embodiments of an electrooptic concept are dis- closed. The fundamental device is an oscillator comprising an electric circuit and an optical leg. In the circuitry, a return beam of amplitude modulated radiation is converted to an electric signal, amplified, and used to modulate the drive in an LED type transducer wherein the electric signals are converted to a beam of optical radiation. The beam is delivered to and returned from a reflective surface with waveguide means. The device operates by converting the phase shifts in the optical beam which occur due to actual or effective changes in the pathlength of the optical leg to identical corresponding shifts in an electric rf signal, the latter being representative of the frequency of the rf oscillator. The resonant frequency of the oscillator is a measure of the pathlength of the optical leg and this aspect of the present invention is discussed in various applications such as a fluid barometer, differential pressure sensor, fluid velocimeter, Pitot tube, shift position locator and temperature sensors.
