Tailings pond suspension of fine solid particulates in water is separated into solids and clarified water using an endless wire rope anode wrapped multiple times around two or more rollers to form closely spaced anode surfaces wherein cathode surfaces, adjacent to but not in physical contact with the anode surfaces, cause electrophoresis of the suspension due to low voltage high current DC excitation of the electrodes in the suspension to produce clarified water whilst solids are captured by the anode surfaces and removed. Bitumen, if present in significant concentration normally is removed from the suspension by means of an oleophilic apertured wall prior to electrophoresis.
