An electrophoretic display apparatus has grid (10) and cathode (4) conductors arranged as an X-Y matrix spaced from an anode (14) with an electrophoretic dispersion in between them. Pigment particles in the dispersion become charged at selected intersection areas of the X-Y matrix and migrate towards the anode (14) to form a display image thereon by biasing the cathode (4) negatively with respect to the anode (14), and the display image is erased by oppositely biasing the cathode (4) and anode (14). The anode (14) is formed with a multiplicity of parallel anode line segments (62) corresponding to image lines of the display, and control circuitry is provided for individually controlling the potential applied to each anode line segment (62) in order to allow selective erasure of one or more lines and rewriting of only those lines. A new image frame having a substantial portion thereof the same as a previous frame can thus be rewritten in a shorter time.

Comprend des conducteurs de grille (10) et de cathode (4) disposés selon une matrice X-Y à une certaine distance d'une anode (14), avec dispersion par électrophorèse dans l'espace intermédiaire. Les particules de pigment de la dispersion se chargent en certains points d'intersection de la matrice X-Y et migrent vers l'anode (14) pour y former une image par polarisation de la cathode (4) négativement par rapport à l'anode (14), et l'image formée est effacée par polarisation opposée de la cathode (4) et de l'anode (14). L'anode (14) est constituée d'une multiplicité de segments de lignes parallèles (62) correspondant à des lignes d'image de l'affichage, et des circuits de commande permettent de commander individuellement le potentiel appliqué à chaque segment de ligne (62) afin de permettre l'effacement sélectif d'une ou de plusieurs lignes et la réécriture de ces lignes uniquement. Une nouvelle image dont une bonne partie est identique à une image antérieure peut ainsi être réécrite en moins de temps.
