A triode-type electrophoretic display (10) includes a pair of substantially identical glass faceplates (12, 14) sealed against a peripheral sealing wall (16) to form a fluid-tight envelope for containing an electrophoretic fluid. A first faceplate (12) bears the anode which is composed of a plurality of elongated substanitially parallel vertical conductor members (18) disposed within a first plane and a plurality of elongated substantially parallel vertical conductor member(20). The horizontal and vertical members are insulated from each other by interstitial insulator strips underlying the vertical members and by a SiO2 layer. The vertical and horizontal members are slotted and grouped into: groups so that the area of the intersection of a vertical group and a horizontal group approximates that of a single character. The cathode and grid are formed on the other faceplate in essentially the same manner as the composite anode. By placing the proper voltages on the horizontal and vertical elements of the anode, selective characters may be erased from the display.

L'invention est un afficheur électrophorétique du type triode (10) qui est constitué d'une paire de plaques de verre essentiellement identiques (12, 14) fixées hermétiquement à une paroi périphérique (16) de façon à former une enveloppe imperméable pour un fluide électrophorétique. La première plaque (12) porte l'anode qui est composée d'une pluralité d'éléments conducteurs verticaux allongés essentiellement parallèles (18) placés dans un plan et d'une pluralité d'éléments conducteurs verticaux allongés essentiellement parallèles (20). Les éléments horizontaux et verticaux sont isolés les uns des autres par des bandes isolantes interstitielles placées sous les éléments verticaux et par une couche de SiO2. Les éléments verticaux et horizontaux sont fendus et sont groupés de telle façon que l'aire de l'intersection d'un groupe vertical et d'un groupe horizontal est approximativement égale à l'aire d'un caractère. La cathode et la grille sont formées sur l'autre plaque essentiellement de la même façon que l'anode composite.
