An on-axis ion source has an ionization chamber and an adjacent low-pressure region The on-axis ion source also includes a capilla tube (20) having an axial bore for supporting fluid communication between the ionization chamber and the adjacent low-pressure region, the axial bore of the capillary tube (20) being substantially concentrically aligned with the orifice (36) of a skimmer (38) loc downstream in the ion path from the capillary tube (20) A blocking element (50) is provided in an aligned facing arrangement with axial bore of the capillary tube (20) and on an opposite side of the orifice (36) relative to the capillary tube (20) The blocking eleme (50) receives droplets or particles flowing through the axial bore of the capillary tube (20) and passing through the orifice (36) of th skimmer (38) The combination of an on-axis arrangement and the use of a blocking element (50) results in improved signal-to-nois level due to enhanced ion transmission and reduction of noise arising from passage ofundesolvated droplets and particles to the mas analyzer

L'invention concerne une source ionique dans l'axe possédant une chambre de ionisation et une région basse pression adjacente. La source ionique dans l'axe comporte également un tube capillaire possédant un alésage axial permettant d'assurer la communication fluide entre la chambre de ionisation et la région basse pression adjacente, l'alésage axial du tube capillaire étant aligné sensiblement de manière concentrique avec l'orifice d'un écrémeur situé en aval dans le trajet ionique du tube capillaire. Un élément de blocage est disposé dans le prolongement de l'alésage axial du tube capillaire et sur un côté opposé de l'orifice par rapport au tube capillaire. L'élément de blocage reçoit des gouttelettes ou particules s'écoulant à travers l'alésage axial du tube capillaire et passant à travers l'orifice de l'écrémeur. La combinaison d'une configuration dans l'axe et de l'utilisation d'un élément de blocage se traduit par un niveau signal/bruit amélioré du fait d'une transmission ionique renforcée et d'une plus grande réduction du bruit lié au passage de gouttelettes et particules de solvant vers l'analyseur de masse.
