ABSTRACT The invention relates to an electrostatic copying apparatus of the type in which an electrostatic latent image is formed on the surface of a photosensitive member. Specifically, a corona discharge device is used to charge up the photosensitive member and an image of an original document is projected to the charged surface by an optical system including a lamp for illuminating the original thereby to form the electrostatic latent image. According to the invention, for a specified period of time which runs from the time when the corona discharge device for charging has been deenergized by the completion of the electrostatic latent image-forming step light is irradiated on the surface of the photosensitive member in an area downstream of the corona discharge device for charging and upstream of the developing device along the moving path of the surface of the photosensitive member.
