ABSTRACT Electrostatic printing and photocopying providing for en- hanced image quality at high speeds. After separate formation of a latent electrostatic image on a dielectric member both the printing and photocopying apparatus may employ identical toning apparatus. In the photocopying apparatus an image is optically created on a precharged photoconductor and transferred to the dielectric member. A semiconductor substrate is preferably in- cluded in the photoconductor member for enhanced image transfer quality. In the printing apparatus an electrostatic image is formed. For example, on an imaging roller by an ion generator comprising two electrodes separated by a solid dielectric, with a high frequency alternating potential used to create an air gap breakdown in a region at a function of one of the electrodes and the solid dielectric. A direct current extraction potential applied to the junction electrode is used to extract ions from the discharge thus created. The ion generator and extractor may also be used in photo- copier and other applications. The image bearing dielectric member advantageously consists of impregnated anodized aluminum oxide, with high resistivity, and good hardness and smoothness to ensure essentially total transfer of the toned image to a receptor medium. This transfer may be effected with simul- taneous image fusing by passing the receptor between the image roller and a backup roller under high pressure. Provision may be made for removing toner remaining on the two rollers, and to erase any latent electrostatic image on the image roller.
