An improved electrosurgical device having an end effector capable of receiving electrosurgical energy therein. The end effector comprises first and second opposing interfacing surfaces. The interfacing surfaces are capable of engaging tissue therebetween. There is provided a first electrode of a first electrical potential and a second electrode being insulated from the first electrode and having a second electrical potential that is different from the first electrical potential. The first and second electrodes are arranged to receive the electrosurgical energy therein. The opposing interfacing surfaces are electrically insulated and the first electrode is located on the first interfacing surface and the second electrode is located on one of the first and second interfacing surfaces. The improvement resides in that the first electrode is a spring electrode that is flexible so that it is moveable towards and away from the first electrode and is biased towards the second electrode. The result is that this enables the distance between the electrodes to be continuously adaptable to different tissue impedances due to different thicknesses and compressibilities of the engaged tissue. In another aspect the invention provides an electrosurgical kit comprising the electrosurgical device and at least two interchangeable cartridges, which cartridges are insertable into the end effector to form at least a portion of a first interfacing surface.
