CA 2254154

Oxidation of alkyl and aromatic compounds using ceric ions. The alkyl and aromatic compounds are in solution in a C5 to C15 alkane, preferably hexane or n-heptane or n-decane or cyclohexane, at a concentration preferably between 0.1 to 3.0 molar, such that the carbonyl compound obtained is at a concentration which is above its minimum solubility in the alkanes and below the maximum solubility of the aromatic or alkyl aromatic compound in the alkanes. The product obtained is purer, i.e. there are lesser by-products associated therewith, and chemical yields are substantially improved.
