An electrothermal deicing system for an airfoil includes a plurality of cycled ice shedding zones and anti- icing parting strips, with a temperature sensor attached to the inner surface of the airfoil skin over a primary shed zone to detect the environmental conditions of the skin over the primary shed zone. The primary shed zone is energized, and the temperature sensor provides a temperature signal to a controller which determines the time tPEAK it takes to reach a predetermined peak temperature. The tPEAK time is indicative of the environmental conditions and is utilized by the controller to: set the gate on time of the remainder of shed zones which are cycled according to the a predetermined sequence; and set the dwell time between temperature cycles. In this manner the heater elements are continuously monitored and cycled in accordance with true environmental conditions.
