ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A latching mechanism for a self-cleaning oven is provided which utilizes an electrothermal actuator to operate a latch member to provide a latching of the oven door when a self- cleaning mode is selected. A crank member can be used as part of the latching mechanism to amplify the stroke length of the actuator to provide a greater throw for the latch mechanism than that provided by the actuator. Also, the crank mechanism can be utilized to change the direction of movement between the actuator and the latching operation. In addition to the selector switch used to energize the actuator, other switches such as a timer switch and a door position switch can be incorporated to control the flow of current to the actuator. Further, another switch can be used to detect the actual locked condition of the latch prior to energizing the cleaning elements. 13
