A B S T R A C T A novel cathode starting sheet is provided for the electrowinning of zinc from zinc sulfate-sulfuric acid electrolyte. In contrast to the conventional pure aluminum sheets of the prior art cathode starting sheets are employed which are formed of commercial grade aluminum alloyed with small but effective amounts of titanium and/or magnesium. Small amounts of these metals have been found to be effective in improving not only the strippability of the zinc which is deposited on the sheets but also the corrosion resistance of the sheets themselves.
