ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A nuclear reactor coolant channel contains an array of nuclear fuel rods cooled by water which is allowed to boil. The fuel rods are supported by axially spaced grids with otherwise unobstructed passageways between them. The grids locate the fuel rods in more than two annular rows with an odd number of fuel rods in the outer annular row adjacent to, but spaced from, the channel wall.
