The invention relates to an element for sealing and monitoring a body (1). Provision is made for two seals (4, 5) to be spaced apart by supporting elements (6), while at least one channel (7) remains free between the supporting elements 16). At the outlet openings of said channel one or more sensors (18) is or are disposed. The seals (4, 5) are connected to each other at their edges. The supporting elements (6) consist of a material which is permeable but resistant to flow, preferably a material whose flow resistance perpendicular to the channel (7) is less than that parallel to the channel (7). The position of a leak (29) can be determined with the aid of two sensors (18), which in a refuse dump also determine whether the leak (29) is located in the lower or upper seal (4, 5).
