In order to further develop an elevator having a car (2) that attaches to a counterweight (6) that interacts with a drive (14, 15) via a drive cable (9) having a first and second section (9.1, 9.2), with the objective of providing for simple and cost-effective installation together with economical operation and a motor consuming less power, it is suggested that drive cable (9) be designed as a continuous cable, whose ends are secured in head (1.1) and in foot (1.2) of elevator shaft (1), the upper and lower sections (9.1, 9.2) of which run over upper or lower rollers (8,7) that are located on counterweight (6) and are deflected over stationary rollers (11, 17) that are located in the head (1.1) and in the foot (1.2) of elevator shaft (1), whereby cable section (9.3), which runs between these rollers (11, 17) together with both the other sections (9.1, 9.2), forms a continuous cable and whereby drive (14, 15) is provided in the region of this section (9.3).
