ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A drive apparatus for elevators and the like utilizes a traction-type speed change gear to transmit power with little noise and vibrations from an electric drive motor to the drive sheave of an elevator. An abnormality detection device is provided to detect when slippage occurs in the speed change gear, and a control device activated by the abnormality detection device is provided to bring the elevator to a safe emergency stop when such slippage occurs.
