An elevator system (1) comprises an elevator cabin (7) and a counterweight (18) associated with the elevator cabin (7), said cabin and counterweight being fixed to a pulling means (10). Also, a drive pulley (17) is provided for moving the pulling means (10). A bottom tensioning means (19) is fixed to the counterweight (18) and to the elevator cabin (7). A tensioning means weight (22) tensions the bottom tensioning means (19). In an end position of the counterweight (18), the elevator cabin (7) can continue to move when the pulling means (10) is moved further by the drive pulley (17). This moves the tensioning means weight (22) at half the speed of the elevator cabin (7), for example. A measuring device (80) is provided for the tensioning means weight (22) for detecting such a motion of the tensioning means weight (22). This allows a triggering of an emergency stop of the elevator cabin (7).
