ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An elevator drive sheave, from which the car is suspended, has a drive shaft rotatably supported by a frame member. The main hoist motor is coupled to the drive shaft directly or through gears, and a linear actuator is connected between the hoist motor and frame. The linear actuator coupler absorbs reaction rotational torque of the motor and also can selectively pivot the motor and thereby the drive sheave about the sheave axis or another axis while the hoist motor brake is engaged. As a result, the car may be re-positioned while stopped at a landing without using the hoist motor.
