ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for removing selective flocs of iron minerals from an aqueous dispersion of crude silicious iron ore containing selective flocs of iron minerals comprising the steps of introducing said dispersion into an upwardly flowing elutriating stream, the upward flow rate of said elutriating stream being less than the settling velocity of a desired size of iron mineral flocs to allow downward movement against the flow of said stream by iron mineral flocs equal to or greater than such desired size, but greater than the settling velocity of undesired silica materials to allow upward movement with the flow of said stream by such undesired silica materials, removing downwardly moving iron mineral flocs from said elutriating stream in an underflow stream, and removing upwardly flowing silica materials from said elutriating stream in an overflow stream.
