An emboli filtration apparatus (10) is provided comprising a guide wire (71) having a filter element captured thereon, so that the guide wire (71) is free to rotate or translate while the filter element (70) remains stationary. The apparatus (10) allows for movement and rotation of the guide wire (71) as devices are advanced over it to treat occlusive disease, substantially without dislodging the filter element (70).
