A method and apparatus for automatically starting an EMD locomotive engine. The disclosed method and apparatus consists of 3 distinct sub-methods and sub- apparati; the first being a method of and apparatus for overriding the engine crankcase protection device, comprising the steps of blocking the airflow to the engine crankcase protection device for a predetermined period of time during engine auto start to prevent the engine crankcase protective device from activating and automatically shutting down the engine; the second being a method of and apparatus for overriding the engine low-water protection device comprising the steps of venting the airflow to the low-water protective device for a predetermined period of time during autostart to prevent the low-water protective device from activating and automatically shutting down the engine; the third being a method of and apparatus for simulating manual movement of the layshaft of an engine, comprising the steps of electronically energizing at least one solenoid valve in the engine governor to relieve tension on the layshaft and cause it to move and thereby move the injector rack to cause the injector rack to spray fuel into the engine cylinders.
