An emergency passenger evacuation system for aircraft or other elevated structures includes an elongate fabric chute having a series of segments which sequentially release to selectively elongate the chute in a stepwise fashion to accommodate varying drop heights. The segments each include a tuck of fabric, with a releasible retainer for holding the tuck in a shorten position, and releasing the tuck to extend the chute length. The upper end of the chute may join with a support frame consisting of an array of inflatable tubes. The lower end of the chute may be associated with an angled slide, with the length of the chute being determined by reference to the need for maintaining the slide angle within a selected range.
