An emergency sign includes a sign enclosure, a light mounted in the enclosure, and a sign plate mounted in the enclosure. The sign plate bears alpha-numeric indicia, graphic indicia or both. The indicia is formed with a luminescent material. The sign plate is backlit by the light. The light illuminates the indicia and activates the luminescent material, so that the indicia gives off a luminescent glow making the indicia visible when power to the light is disrupted.
