ABSTRACT An emergency vent for use on a tank for storing or transporting fuel or the like has a housing with a cover thereon. The housing has an upper portion and a lower portion with a screw thread on the outer surface of the lower portion for affixing the vent to a tank opening. Alternatively, the lower portion can have a plain end for welding to the tank. The upper portion has a larger diameter than the lower portion and contains a support having a passageway with a bolt extending through the passageway and being connected to the cover. The bolt has a head which is too large to pass through the passageway. The cover has a circular groove on an inner surface thereof, the groove being sized so that a top edge of the housing fits within the groove when the cover is in a closed position. The bolt limits the distance that the cover can be raised above the housing. In a variation of the vent, the groove contains a gasket and there is a spring located on the bolt between the support and the head, the spring exerting a force to hold the cover on the housing. A disc that is concave upward can be mounted on the bolt between the cover and the support to make pilferage more difficult. Previous emergency vents do not reduce the chances of pilferage or they are continuously open resulting in the loss of fuel vapours or they do not prevent dirt or other contaminants from entering the tank.
