A B S T R A C T The present invention resides in the field of hydrogenation of hydrocarbonaceous substances, especially coal. The invention is a process for hydrogenating a hydrocarbonaceous substrate by contacting it as a water-immiscible liquid phase with hydrogen in the presence of a metal-containing hydrogenation catalyst where the catalyst is initially added to the liquid phase as an emulsion of a water solution of a compound of the metal in the liquid phase. Advantages that are obtained include more con- venient and efficient dispersion and utilization of the catalyst, so that less catalyst is required for optimum results. 18,292-F
