The invention relates to emulsions intended for parenteral administration and containing a hydrophobic phase emulsified in an aqueous phase. In accordance with the invention, a substantial part of the hydrophobic phase contains one or more alkyl esters of pharmacologically acceptable fatty acids, and particularly their ethyl esters. The emulsions can be used for parenteral nutrient supply and as vehicles for pharmacologically active substances or agents, and may also be used for both purposes in combination.
