An aqueous emulsion is made in a two-stage polymerization. In the first stage, monomers which give rise to a low Tg polymer are polymerized, whereas in the second stage, monomers which give rise to a high Tg polymer are polymerized. In one or both of the stages, a monomer having at least two carboxyl or carboxylate groups forms part of the monomer mixture. The resulting polymer is particularly useful in coating compositions, where it provides a good combination of blocking and scrub resistance.
La présente invention concerne une émulsion aqueuse réalisée grâce à une polymérisation en deux étapes. Lors de la première étape, on polymérise des monomères qui engendrent un polymère à température de transition vitreuse (T¿g?) basse, alors que lors de la seconde étape, on polymérise des monomères qui engendrent des polymères à T¿g? élevée. Au cours d'une des étapes ou des deux étapes, on trouve dans le mélange de monomères, un monomère contenant au moins deux groupes carboxyles ou carboxylates. Le polymère ainsi obtenu est particulièrement utile dans des compositions de revêtement dans lesquelles il assure une bonne combinaison des résistances au blocage et au lessivage.
