The invention relates to a microcapsule comprising an inorganic antimicrobial agent coated with a hydrophilic polymer. The hydrophilic polymer is able to absorb sufficient water as to enable the action of the encapsulated antimicrobial agent. These microcapsules are useful to impart antimicrobial activity and can be used in polymer compositions, sprays and coatings. A method of preparing the microcapsule by treatment of the antimicrobial agent with a solution of the hydrophilic polymer is provided. Another embodiment of the invention is a method of preparing the microcapsule by coating of the antimicrobial agent with a polymer precursor followed by treatment with a reactive ingredient. Another embodiment of the invention is a method of preparing the microcapsule by melt compounding the antimicrobial agent with the hydrophilic polymer followed by grinding to the desired particle size. Polymer compositions comprising the microcapsules and a matrix polymer are also provided. Another embodiment of the is invention is an article prepared from the polymer compositions comprising the microcapsules and a matrix polymer.
L'invention concerne une microcapsule comprenant un agent antimicrobien inorganique enrobé d'un polymère hydrophile. Le polymère hydrophile est capable d'absorber suffisamment d'eau pour permettre l'action de l'agent antimicrobien encapsulé. Les microcapsules décrites dans cette invention permettent d'assurer une activité antimicrobienne, et elles peuvent être utilisées dans des compositions, des sprays et des enrobages polymères. La présente invention concerne également un procédé permettant de préparer la microcapsule par traitement de l'agent antimicrobien avec une solution du polymère hydrophile. Un autre mode de réalisation concerne un procédé permettant de préparer la microcapsule par enrobage de l'agent antimicrobien au moyen d'un précurseur polymère, suivi d'un traitement avec un ingrédient réactif. Un autre mode de réalisation concerne un procédé permettant de préparer la microcapsule par mélange par fusion de l'agent antimicrobien et du polymère hydrophile, puis par broyage jusqu'à la taille de particules souhaitée. Cette invention concerne également des compositions polymères contenant les microcapsules et une matrice. Un autre mode de réalisation concerne un article préparé à partir des compositions polymères contenant les microcapsules et une matrice.
