ABSTRACT An encoding method for producing a code associated with inputted information comprises several steps. Firstly, if a numerical representation of the inputted information is smaller than a predetermined numerical value a predetermined operation is applied to the information. A residual remaining after a result of the operation is divided by the numerical value is produced as an interim result. If the numerical representation of the in- putted information is not smaller than the numerical value, a predetermined conversion is applied to the information and a result of the conversion is produced as an interim result. A further step involves applying a predetermined code conversion to the interim result and producing a result of the code conversion as a new interim result. If the new interim result is smaller than the numerical value, the predetermined operation is applied to the new interim result and a residual remaining after a result of the predetermined operation is divided by the numerical value is produced as the code. If the new interim result is not smaller than the predetermined numerical value, a predetermined conversion is applied to the new interim result and a result of the conversion is produced as the code.
