The invention provides an exemplary chemical library which includes a plurality of constructs which are separable into physically distinct groups. The constructs in each group have at least one common physical characteristic, which is physically distinct from the physical characteristics of the constructs in all other groups. The physical characteristics represent the manner by which the group is testable. The constructs are especially bead- linker-tag-ligand systems. The physical characteristics are especially the size or density of the bead. Preferably, the physical characteristic of a bead is indicative of the type of linker used, which provides easy recognition of constructs suitable for use in specific assays.
