ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention provides an insert for use in retaining an end portion of a cable in a socket. In a cable having a central wire and a plurality of wires wound helically about a central wire the cable has an end portion identified by a serving wrapped around the cable and defining the limit of the end portion. A socket having a conical opening contains a part of the end portion of the cable with the opening diverging outwardly away from the serving. A conical insert is positioned in the end portion the insert having a conical central opening which also diverges outwardly away from the serving. This insert contains the central wire and a filler material. The filler material is set in the interstices between the wires and the insert inside the socket. When used in association with a cable having a plurality of annular layers of helically wound wires a second insert may be positioned in the end portion, the second insert having a central opening which contains the first insert and some of the wound wires. In this latter case the filler material is set in the interstices between the wires and said inserts inside the socket.
