ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A hydraulic end of car cushioning device for use in railway freight cars. The device is intended for use between the coupler shank and car under- frame of a fixed sill type car and is designed so as to provide a long cushioning stroke under high impact loads. A load responsive check valve is interposed in the metering system of the cushioning device for preventing changes in lengthof the unit under lower buff and draft forces as occur in train action.
