ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE End of character flag bits are stored in each character matrix, which matrix defines a character shape as a pattern of binary ones and zeros, and which is stored in a character generator memory, to provide a means and method of proportionally spaced character printing. The character matrix starting addresses of a series of characters to be printed are stored in an output line buffer memory. Each time the memory is inter- rogated by an output line buffer address counter, a new starting address is loaded into a character generator address counter from the output line buffer memory. As the counter increments, portions of the selected character matrix within the character generator are transmitted along with at least one end of character flag bit which bit identifies that portion as either NOT end of character or end of character. When the end of character is detected it is transmitted to the character generator address counter and to the output line buffer address counter. In response to end of character, a new starting address is loaded into the character generator address counter stopping transmission of the previously selected character matrix. The end of character signal to the output line buffer address counter increments the counter to select a new starting address in the output line buffer memory for loading in the character generator address counter upon receipt of the next end of character signal. Error correction coding capability is added to the end of character flag bit by providing a 3 bit end of character pattern, encoded to provide single bit error correction in the end of character flag. In addition, a parity bit is added to each transmitted portion of the character matrix. If checking of the parity of the transmitted portion indicates no error but an invalid end of character bit pattern is detected, a stop print interrupt signal is generated. -18-
