Abstract of the Disclosure Data recorders, and more particularly flight data acquisition recorders, employ an endless loop of magnetic tape as the recording medium, with the tape being formed into a coiled store having a number of turns. The tape is coiled around a hub which provides a former for the tape, and in addition serves as a source of friction which can be troublesome. In normal operation the friction can be overcome by the tape drive mechanism. Where the recorder is subjected to sustained acceleration, as with a flight recorder, it may malfunction. It is also essential that in pulling the tape at an angle to the plane of the store no permanent deformation occur, and that the tape be accurately aligned with the head or heads. This invention provides a data recorder with an endless loop of magnetic tape and one or more magnetic heads, the magnetic tape being wound around roller members to provide a tape store. Within the center of the store, the one or more magnetic heads are mounted. The plurality of freely-rotatable rollers pro- vide an arrangement which helps to reduce the tape holdback force under all conditions, and still provides for precise operation between the magnetic tape and head or heads.
