This invention provides plants having recombinant nucleic acid sequences derived from tomato-1-4-.beta.-glucanase. Plants of this invention may exhibit reduced fruit softening and cell wall polysaccharide degradation through inhibition of endogenous 1,4- .beta.-glucanase activity using antisense nucleic acid constructions.
