An endoluminal tissue excision catheter system (10) for excision of tissue from a vessel which includes a guide wire (80) advanced within the vessel to a location beyond the tissue to be excised. A cut/collect catheter (20) is advanced over the guide wire (80) until the distal end of the cut/collector catheter (20) is locationally positioned beyond the tissue to be excised. System (10) further includes a cutting cylinder (22) having a cutting edge (24) located at the distal end of the cut/collect catheter (20) and forms a tissue collection chamber within an interior surface. A closing catheter (50) surrounds the cut/collect catheter (20) through at least a portion of its length. The closing catheter (50) is displaced along the cut/collect catheter (20) and includes a tapered distal portion for contiguously contacting the proximal end of a cutting cylinder (22) subsequent to the tissue to be excised being cut in order to secure the cut tissue within the tissue collection chamber.
