An endometrial ablation method comprising passing sufficient RF current having a frequency of from 250 kHz to about 100 MHz through substantially the entire surface of the endometrium to heat the endometrium, in a single operation, to a temperature within the range of from 45°C to 90°C and preferably not above 70°C for a time sufficient to destroy the cells of the lining while maintaining the average temperature of the myometrium at a temperature below 42°C. The apparatus comprises an electroconductive expandable member such as a balloon (14) for extending the organ and effecting electrical contact with the endometrial lining to be destroyed. The balloon is connected to power source (30) adapted to provide radiofrequency electric power having the desired characteristics to selectively heat the endometrial lining to the desired temperature. The balloon (14) can be an electroconductive elastomer such as a mixture of a polymeric elastomer and electroconductive particles. Alternatively it can be a non-extensible bladder having a shape and size, which will extend the organ and effecting contact with the endometrial lining to be destroyed.
Procédé d'ablation endométriale dans lequel on envoie suffisamment de courant HF dont la fréquence est comprise entre 250 kHz et environ 100 MHz dans presque toute la surface de l'endomètre pour chauffer ce dernier, d'une seule fois, à une température comprise entre 45 C et 90 C mais ne dépassant pas de préférence 70 C, pendant une durée suffisante pour détruire les cellules de la tunique interne tout en maintenant la température moyenne du myomètre à une température inférieure à 42 C. L'appareil comprend un élément dilatable électroconducteur tel qu'un ballonnet (14) qui étire l'organe et assure le contact électrique avec la tunique interne endométriale qu'on veut détruire. Le ballonnet est couplé à une source (30) de puissance pouvant fournir de la puissance électrique HF possédant les caractéristiques voulues pour chauffer sélectivement la tunique interne de l'endomètre à la température voulue. Ce ballonnet (14) peut être un élastomère électroconducteur tel qu'un mélange constitué d'un élastomère polymère et de particules électroconductrices. Dans un autre mode de réalisation, ledit ballonnet peut être une vessie non extensible dont la forme et la taille permettent d'étirer l'organe et d'assurer le contact avec la tunique interne endométriale qu'on désire détruire.
