A module for linking with like modules to thereby provide a barrier system, said module comprising a substantially rectangular unit having a top, a bottom, two sides and two ends, each end of the module including interconnecting portions which interfit with the interconnecting portions of like modules when forming the barrier system, each interconnecting portion including means to allow said modules to rotate with respect to one another up to a predetermined number of degrees with respect to like adjacent modules, wherein when adjacent like elements are interconnected with one another to provide a barrier system, when subjected to an impacting load said like elements will (i) deflect laterally with respect to the initial positioning of the barrier system proximate the area of impact (ii) while transferring some of the impacting load to adjacent modules through said interconnecting portions, and thereby dissipate impact energy by distributing the load upon at least two of the modules so linked together.
