An energy absorbing steering column comprises a billowed collapsible portion. The billowed collapsible portion allows the steering column to be collapsible and absorb energy upon receiving an impact load at or greater than a predetermined impact force. The collapsible portion may be "billowed in" (diameter of collapsible portion less than that of the steering column) or "billowed out" (diameter of collapsible portion greater than that of the steering column). The billowed collapsible portion has a load bearing edge and a deformable edge. The load bearing edge is capable of withstanding a force greater than a predetermined impact force and the deformable edge is capable of initiating deformation of the deformation edge at the predetermined impact force. The present energy absorbing steering column obviates the need a steering column comprising telescoping column jackets and a separate energy absorption device attached to the steering column.
