During operation of a mechanical press, it is useful to measure the amount of energy consumed in a typical press stroke. Energy measurements assist a press operator in determining whether the motor and flywheel combination is sufficient for a particular application, and whether any press parts have become inefficient. The invention uses speed determinations of a selected rotating or moving press part along with known values for the inertia of the press part to determine the difference in total energy over a preselected interval. The calculations can then be compared to previous calculations and desirable values to determine press efficiency. Additionally, the meter can report further useful calculations such as press slowdown percentage, a function of the difference in the already-known speed determinations.
