A method of operating an internal combustion reciprocating piston engine comprises the steps of: moving a piston (12) within a cylinder (10) to compress a charge in the cylinder (10) and igniting the compressed charge while the piston is being moved in the chamber at substantially constant or increasing velocity. The length, duration and pattern of at least one piston stroke may differ from the length, duration and pattern of another stroke.

L'invention concerne un procédé permettant de faire fonctionner un moteur à combustion interne à piston à mouvement alternatif qui consiste à déplacer un piston (12) dans un cylindre (10) pour comprimer une charge dans le cylindre (10) et enflammer la charge comprimée tandis que le piston est déplacé dans la chambre à une vitesse sensiblement constante ou croissante. La longueur, la durée et le trajet d'au moins une course de piston peut être différente de la longueur, de la durée et du trajet d'une autre course.
