A two cycle, preferably diesel, engine has a turbocharger with an exhaust driven turbine and supplemental mechanical drive maintaining a fixed minimum turbine/engine speed ratio with fuel efficient freewheeling (fully exhaust sustained) turbine operation at higher speeds and loads. A turbo boost system provides freewheeling turbine operation at intermediate speeds where it might or will not otherwise occur. When an intermediate speed is reached at which freewheeling can be sustained but is not occurring, the system 1) temporarily increases engine speed to a predetermined higher level to accelerate the turbine and increase engine air flow, 2) increases engine fuel input to a higher level capable of sustaining freewheeling, and 3) reduces engine speed to the selected intermediate speed while maintaining a fuel input level adequate to maintain turbine freewheeling. Methods and means for providing and controlling intermediate speed freewheeling operation are disclosed.
Moteur à deux cycles, de préférence un moteur diesel, comprenant : un turbocompresseur dont la turbine est entraînée par les gaz d'échappement; et une transmission mécanique supplémentaire qui maintient un rapport de vitesse turbine/moteur fixe minimum. La turbine de cette transmission mécanique supplémentaire affiche une marche en roue libre à faible consommation de carburant (complètement actionnée par les gaz d'échappement) lors de vitesses et de charges supérieures. Un système de suralimentation permet à la turbine de fonctionner en marche à roue libre lors de vitesses intermédiaires pendant lesquelles la marche en roue libre pourrait ou non avoir lieu. Lorsqu'une vitesse intermédiaire pouvant maintenir la marche en roue libre est atteinte, mais que cette dernière n'a pas lieu, le système : 1) augmente temporairement la vitesse du moteur jusqu'à ce qu'elle atteigne un niveau supérieur préétabli, afin d'accélérer la turbine et augmenter la circulation d'air du moteur; 2) accroît l'apport de carburant au moteur à un niveau supérieur capable de maintenir la marche en roue libre; et 3) réduit la vitesse du moteur à une vitesse intermédiaire sélectionnée tout en conservant le niveau d'apport de carburant requis pour supporter la marche en roue libre. La présente invention fait également état de méthodes et de dispositifs servant à déclencher et à commander la marche en roue libre à des vitesses intermédiaires.
